High-flying Tuesday F-16;
A tanker with its kerosene;
Soldiers out in olive green;
A slim and lethal submarine:
Reminders you can often meet
That our own peaceful, sun-soaked Crete
Fulfils strategic needs a treat
For NATO’s aircraft and its fleet.
Which means in turn that we should know
That if the region’s fuses blow
Whoever turns out as the foe
Will likely find some bombs to throw.
This is, I grant you, the “worst-case”
But still I am rather glad my place
Is not beside and doesn’t face
One or other NATO base.
