BITING YOUR TONGUE

Sometimes, when each of us was young,

We’d eat so fast we’d bite our tongue –

A very painful thing it was

But pay attention now because

These words can have a different sense

Of trying not to cause offence.

“I had to bite my tongue” he said

“I didn’t say what could have led

To arguments, perhaps a fight,

Although I knew he wasn’t right.

I had the words all ready but

I chose to keep my mouth quite shut

As if my tongue were gripped by teeth

Though I was angry underneath.”
