PHOTOGRAPHY AND POEMS

INSTANT RECALL

You really needn’t envy me

My photographic memory:

The photos in my little mind

Are not as sharp or well-defined

As digital photography –

I’m more the 19th century.

As I am sure you will have heard

Most early photos turned out blurred

And when you go back to the past

Those early inks weren’t colourfast;

An image might just fade away –

My memory’s a bit that way.

My snapshots are not neat and posed

And in some cases weren’t exposed

Quite long enough to good strong light

So now are dim instead of bright.

And there’s another category –

Those shots not in my memory:

Some things I’ve seen, some things have read

Should be by rights there in my head

But no! It seems that they are gone –

Perhaps I left the lens cap on.
